I like to pump iron, and I've used a lot of different protein powders in my day. This powder I would rate as acceptable. Here's why:



The pros:



1. The primary ingredient is egg albumen. Therefore, it is high quality protein.

2. It contains more essential amino acids than an equivalent serving of whey protein.

3. It does not bother my lactose intolerant stomach.





The cons:



1. The taste is not the worst I've ever had, but it is certainly not the best either. As protein powders go, I would rate the taste as manageable.



2. This powder does not dissolve easily. I always use a hand blender. If you don't have a blender handy, plan to do a lot of shaking.

I have tried many protein shakes from BSN to Met-rx. Both of these shakes take way too much powder and do not dissolve correctly and for it actually be a a liquid it takes a few glasses of water/milk. I just tried this optimum nutrition product and the serving size is minimal and only take 8 - 10 oz of water/milk to dissolve! The taste is not amazing but very good for a protein shake. For a serving far less then the competitors, the egg protein is still better for you because of the 8 essential amino acids found in the egg.

Well I got swayed by the hype and advertising so I bought this product.



PROS

Egg protein has a good nutritional profile so it assimilates slower than Whey and thats a benefit when sleeping at night.



CONS

Taste - The WORST tasting protein powder I have ever come across in over 11 years of using protein supplements. It tastes extremely chemical. The sweetener and flavouring agent they have used is AWFUL. Its so bad the only way I could drink it was by doing the following:

1. pinching my nose (otherwise the taste would make me want to throw up)

2. pouring it down my throat with my free hand.

3. Immediately rinse my mouth with water to get rid of the aftertaste

4. Suck on a mint to get rid of the remainder of the taste



After about 5 uses I just couldn't bear the thought of drinking anymore of it and just threw it all away.



Customer Service - Several emails to Optimum Nutrition about this product and the poor taste have gone unanswered. So their "customer service" is a joke.



On a scale of 1-10 (1 being the worst) I'd give this product a zero.



How Optimum Nutrition so totally mess up the safest flavour in the world (Vanilla)?? Do their product development guys actually taste the stuff? I'm sure even roadkill has a better flavour .....



CONCLUSION:

Sure it has a great nutrition profile, but so does every other egg protein powder out there and those other ones are tasty and go down easy. Even the no-name generic store egg proteins I've consumed are far superior to this.



There are lots of good, tasty and easy to drink protein powders (whey, hemp, rice, egg), why anyone would buy Optimum's Egg protein is beyond me.

Given those three, it's really hard for me to complain about the taste. Does it taste like a Snickers bar? No. Does it taste bad? Absolutely not.



If you're comparing the taste of these bars to high calorie protein bars with a lot of sugar and saturated fat, I suppose these don't taste as good, but if you're shopping for protein bars, most likely you'll be better served by something with the nutritional content of Optimum Nutrition's bars. These protein bars are for the person who wants to add extra protein to their diet with a minimal amount of additional calories. If you are looking for a bar with maximum calories to support rapid weight gain, these probably are not the best bar for you.



Flavor comments:



I've tried chocolate peanut butter, chocolate truffle, and toasted coconut, and I found all pleasant, but in order, I found the coconut the best (if you like coconut), followed by peanut butter, and then the chocolate truffle. I will order all of them again, but find myself eating more of the first two than the last.



Results:



Using these bars (1-2 per day) in combination with Optimum Nutrition's 100% whey protein and a fairly rigorous exercise routine (P90x for those of you familiar with it), I've put on about 10 lbs of muscle in 6 months and completely changed the look of my body (shred a lot of fat and revealed the six-pack I'd been seeking my whole life). Obviously the exercise is more important than the protein bars I've been eating, but I find these bars make for an excellent between meal snack to keep my metabolism burning all day long. I keep a stock of these in the cupboard at all times and highly recommend them.

ON/OPTIMUM has done it again. They have managed to keep producing an outstanding Whey Protein. If you think it couldn't get any better then get your hands on some of their new stock (just look for the new label). I found that the whey grains are finer, its mixes better and it tastes even better. Plus they decided to give samples sachets of their new release products, like Vassive in some containers.



The new look label is very neo. I really like how it looks. They have really boosted the whole deal considerably.



Switch any bodybuilder's Whey Protein drink with some Optimum 100% Whey Protein and watch as he wants to put a barbell through your head for giving him a McDonald's shake. Once you have convinced him that it is indeed a Whey Protein supplement he will want to see the list of ingredients with the important protein to carbohydrates to fat ratios that will prove its fatty content... only to discover that Optimum 100% Whey Protein just beats all other Whey Protein into submission with its astonishing lack of fats and higher protein content. After trying a half dozen different brands of protein powder, I finally hit upon the balance I was looking for with this. Most of the mainstream brands available are made with large amounts of aspartame and artificial flavor which I find unpleasant, as well as unhealthy, for daily consumption. Also available are several products that contain various forms of protein, but no flavoring at all. Most of these seem to have an intolerable bitter flavor that I simply could not force myself to consume (even after adding Hershey's syrup to the milk).



This product was the perfect balance. It has a very mild cocoa flavor (similar to the flavor of Ovaltine, for example, but even more mild) that leaves your milk just as refreshing as before you add it. It is even tolerable in water, which I have not found competing products to be.



Though I'm not big into the concept of health-food, I would say that if I am going to add a mandatory component to my daily routine, it's a plus if it is a healthy solution.

This is great for dieters because the fat AND sugar are BOTH so low compared to most protein bars. The protein may even give some people energy.



I eat one bar a day instead of a meal, and it does fill me up, but with one bar, you aren't overeating, and stretching your stomach. If I just want a snacck, I have less than one bar, but one FULL bar (and water)= a FULL meal for me. I was surprised about that!



It tastes fine/good but the word truffle is a little ambitious, implying creamy inside. It is about as dry as most protein bars, but that turned out to be good because it helps you drink a full glass of water, further filling you up.



It does deserve 5+ stars because after just 3 DAYS with one bar a day, I seem to already taking off those 5 pounds I want to lose, and they say when you only want to lose a small amount its even harder. I also have my eye on that protein bar made for diabetics, since it has low sugar and low fat, though I'm not diabetic.



Great solution for people on the go or with short break times at lunch. Please skip those gimmicky slim fast bars and most other energy bars-if you check they have much higher fat!



BTW-if you are sig overweight and used to eating large meals, you will prob be okay with 1 1/2 bars as a full meal-not 2.

I have tried several protein/energy bars and came across this one recently. While searching for protein bars on a website, this bar showed up as the only choice that met my criteria of high protein and low fat. I ordered immediately on amazon and so far I have been quite happy with it.



+ High protein content, 20g in each bar.

+ Low fat content. This is a big plus for me. Only 8% of saturated fat (which is much less compared to other protein bars) and 2% cholesterol.

+ No added sugar.

+ Tastes great.

+ Cheap. The amazon deal of automatic monthly order saves even more.



So far I have tried only the 'fudge truffle' flavor. I'm going to try the other flavors too.

I love these as a snack. When exercising hard, you can feel the extra energy and it lasts an hour or two. I've been ready to quit on the bike trail, eat one of these without stopping and am good to go for another hour or two. IMO, only fudge truffle and peanut butter taste ok.

I like a tasty protein, without having to add honey or some other sweetener. This protein gives you about 26 grams per serving. When you work out you need 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, so if your target body weight is 190 lbs then you need 190 grams of protein a day.

The taste is quite good (vanilla cream) and mixes easily. I have been replacing meals with a protein drink, and have lost an inch on my waistline in a week. I am not hungry. Plus, I'm weight training 3 days a week. Five stars!!

Have used other Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey. This does the job. I've noticed considerable gains in lean muscle after use. The only issue I have is how over-the-top sweet this is. I prefer the Double Chocolate over the Vanilla

Overall I do like the product. It has just the right amount of protien at 24g, 3g Carbos and no sugar. It mixes very easily in cold water with no lumps. I would buy again if they would get rid of or greatly reduce the sweetener. The sucralose sweetener is just way too much and makes me almost gag!! I really would prefer this product with a no sugar option.

I searched around for a protein powder that did not have a lot of fat and refined sugar. Seems like most of them are loaded with sugar. I know some other posts here don't like the sucralose but I have never found any credible sources of research that says it is bad for you. And refined sugar is definitely bad for you so I'll stay away from the known evil.



At first I was mixing this. Tried spoons didn't work too well, tried forks and other mixing instruments and it was OK but lumpy. I always put it in milk, tastes best this way to me. Then I started to shake it instead of mixing it (shaken, not stirred) and boy is it much better that way. Very seldom do I get a clump and it is much creamier. It tastes good.



I'm not a scientist or dietician but this stuff squashes that "protein hunger" I used to get. I work out 5-6 times per week with weights and generally consume 3 scoops per day (I think that is about 100g). For me, it is a real bargain and works well.
